John Stevens gets a lot of shit in this town for being mild-mannered and soft-spoken. But give him this: in an era when evasion, deception, or outright stonewalling of the media has become common practice, at least he tells it the way it is. Here he responds to a question from Rich Hoffman of the Daily News.
Hoffman: This is two games now where [Downie's] been involved in a turnover that’s led to an important goal. Knowing him like you do, how do you think he’s going to be able to handle this?
Stevens: Well, I think his feelings are not important right now, to be honest with you.
Not only did Stevens call a player out, but he actually went on to explain what went wrong, why, and what the team needs to do to fix it. It took him all of about 13 seconds. Amazing.
Sitting at a little fold-out table in front of 100 people with a 10×10 banner hooked on a concrete wall behind you must be one of the strangest and most annoying things for a human being to do, especially after a backbreaking loss to your arch-rival. Kudos to Stevens for handling himself like a man, and, refreshingly, without a trace of arrogance.

If Andy said that about Donovan every person’s head in the room would explode.
